Dr. Sonia Hegde is a postdoctoral fellow in epidemiology in the Infectious Disease Dynamics (IDD) group at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Broadly, she studies the environmental and social determinants of infectious diseases. Her work tries to understand how the interface of human behavior and the environment affect disease emergence and transmission and how to improve surveillance systems through the use of both theoretical and empirical approaches to inform epidemiological studies. Aside from scientific research, she has published works of photography and short stories to share notes from the field. She completed her PhD in Epidemiology at the University of Michigan (2018) and MPH at Johns Hopkins University (2011), and has worked as a research scientist at the Vaccine Research Center at the NIH, a consultant at the World Bank Group, and as an epidemiologist at the Global Disease Detection Branch at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
