BCPHR Announces New Editorial Fellowship!

BCPHR's Editorial Fellowship to Train the Next Generation of Editors and Reviewers

The Boston Congress of Public Health Review (BCPHR), the academic journal of the Boston Congress Public Health (formerly HPHR Journal), introduces the Editorial Fellowship, which seeks to educate aspiring academic journal editors and reviewers to peer review, editing, and publishing. Fellows will collaborate and learn from each other and emerge as skilled editors and reviewers who can recognize and assess quality scientific scholarship and work with authors to develop manuscripts that advance and elevate scientific literature. 

This virtual four-month program grounds fellows in all aspects of the academic publishing process and features the following activities: 

  • In-depth about editorial board roles (Editor-in-Chief, Managing Editor, Deputy Editor, Associate Editor, and Reviewer)
  • Diverse trainings, expert panel discussions, and guest lectures.
  • Hands-on engage with individual and group-led peer reviews, submissions management, author communication, and participation in BCPHR editorial meetings.

Who should apply?

  • Persons with a passion for public health, particularly examined through the lenses of social justice and equity, are encouraged to apply.

What are the eligibility requirements?

  • Insight into the peer review process
  • Knowledge regarding how to critically review and recognize the characteristics of well-written manuscript
  • The opportunity to gain an understanding of the publishing process through training in the roles of managing editor, associate editor and reviewer

What Program Activities are planned for this Fellowship?​

  • Completion of online training course and other educational materials
  • Review of selected manuscripts, in consultation with editors
  • Attendance at regular group meetings
  • Opportunity to join the Journal as a reviewer or editor upon completion of the fellowship

What are the eligibility requirements?

  • Academic and professional backgrounds in public health and aligned fields. A bachelor’s degree in public health, epidemiology, biostatistics, health policy, or a related field is required. 
  • Basic understanding of scientific research. Applicants with experience in writing and reviewing grant proposals and other research-related materials preferred.
  • Must be able to join all training sessions (see schedule below).
  • Must have strong written and verbal communication skills  
  • Preferred (but not required): Working knowledge of software tools and platforms used for peer review and public health research (e.g., manuscript management systems, statistical software).
  • Preferred (but not required): Reviewing experience of academic journals.

How many Fellows are being selected?

  • We will select 6-8 Fellows for this program.

What are the obligations associated with the Fellowship?

  • The fellowship will take place from December 2024 to March 2025. Participants MUST attend the three (3) scheduled meetings each month of the Fellowship:
    • December 1, 8, and 15  
    • January 12, 19, 26
    • February 9, 16, 23
    • March 9, 16, 23
