As discussed in the articles enclosed in this edition, obesity is more than an aesthetic concern. It is a commonly overlooked chronic health condition which can contribute to the development of serious illnesses such as hypertension, sleep apnea, and heart failure, to name but a few. Historically, techniques to reduce obesity have focused on changing an individual’s behavior rather than considering their lifestyle surroundings. The following articles highlight that it is no longer enough to endorse reactive measures such as weight-loss medications and devices but rather is time to contemplate our living conditions and the behaviors they promote.
